The Design Canberra Festival celebrates Canberra as a creative capital and a global city of design.

DESIGN Canberra will experiment with new ideas and expand the most successful programs into new directions in the 2022 festival. Over 200 events, exhibitions, talks, tours, activations, markets, collaborations, artist studios and open homes will once again transform the nation’s capital into a new platform for the best in design. The festival, now in its 8th year, is for all interests and ages and most events are free.

Canberra-based artist and educator Lucy Irvine has been selected as the 2021/22 designer-in-residence. Lucy Irvine’s work transforms the traditional craft practice of weaving into sculptural installations. Lucy repurposes mundane, utilitarian materials like expansion joint foam, paper fasteners and cable ties and transforms them into beautiful and acclaimed public artwork.

In creating ‘The Stills’, Irvine has revisited two small sections of weaving, cast them in bronze, then used repetition and pattern forming to show the iterative process of transformation.
