DIA Hall of Fame inductee Dorothy Erickson was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia

In the Australia Day Honours List 2024 jeweller, Art and Design Historian, Curator and Independent Academic Dr Dorothy Erickson was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia in the General Division for her services to the Arts as an artist and historian.


Dorothy who has exhibited in Australia, Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas has held over forty solo exhibitions, is represented in prestigious collections such as the V&A, Swiss National Museum, National Gallery of Australia, Dallas Museum of Art and others has also published substantial books on Western Australian art and design. The latest is Inspired by Light and Land: designers and makers in Western Australia 1970– 21st Century published by the WA Museum. This 700-page book had a launch in Perth at the Art Gallery of WA in November and will have one in Sydney in February at the opening of her solo exhibition celebrating over 50 years of exhibiting jewellery to be held at Artsite Contemporary galleries in Camperdown until February 25.

She will follow this with a retrospective exhibition at the Art Gallery of WA from March 20 – June 30. This has been initiated by the Design Institute of Australia who installed her in their Hall of Fame in 2020 and following covid delays will finally complete the ceremony at AGWA.

A biography Dorothy Erickson: Metamorphosis, Mookaite and the Metropolis the life and work of an artist jeweller will be published to accompany this. Other awards garnered over the years include Fellow and Life Membership of the Craft Council of WA and the Jeweller’s and Metalsmiths Association (WA Inc), Fellow of the Royal Western Australian Historical Society and the Heritage Council of WA Individual Contribution Award.

The exhibitions lead on from her research into the turn of the 20th Century women artists in Western Australia that has been published over the years in the Australiana journal.
