Australia is a regional leader in design education and professional standards. In recognition of the need to provide professional support to Australian educated designers working in their countries of origin, and international designers needing professional networking connections in the Asia-Pacific region, the DIA offers four levels of international personal professional membership.
Rights and benefits differ from Australian resident membership (see Choices & Benefits).
When using the Points System to determine your membership level you can check the equivalency of overseas qualifications through the Australian National Office of Overseas Skills Recognition (educational.noosr@deewr.gov.au)
Being a member of a professional body tells employers that you're serious about a design career. Joining the DIA gives you connections, information and support at that important time in your life when you're getting established in your career. Design students who have graduated from Australian design courses but will return to their own country are eligible for International Graduate membership. Eligibility requirements are otherwise the same as Graduate.
Points System requirement = 6 points.
International Associate membership is ideal for designers employed in consultancies, design departments, university and tertiary design faculties, and designers employed in other non-design businesses. It recognises your status as a practising professional and connects you with the DIA professional network and Australian design.
International Associate members have a minimum of three years involvement with the design professions. Both tertiary education and experience years are counted. Eligibility requirements are the same as Australian Associate.
Points System requirement = 9 points.
Member (MDIA) is the full professional category of the professional body. As a full Member you are entitled to identify your status with the letters patent MDIA. International Members have access to a wide range of DIA information and services. Designers with appropriate qualifications and experience may become Members under more than one design discipline.
Applicants must meet a minimum standard of education, experience, and ethics (see Membership Points System). You must have a minimum of three years verifiable, relevant professional experience.
Points System requirement = 21 points.
Fellowship recognises the value of a designer's service to the design professions and the DIA. International Fellows are entitled to use the postnominals FDIA. Fellowship may be granted to an International Member of the DIA. Eligibility requirements are equivalent to Australian Fellow. An International Member may apply to be considered for recognition as an International Fellow. Recognition is at the sole discretion of the National Membership Committee and National Council.
