The DIA is a professional body. The Professional membership stream centres around fully qualified, experienced practicing designers.
Member (capital M) is the membership level that indicates a designer has been accepted by the professional body as an experienced, qualified designer, and has chosen to access the full range of DIA services. Student and Graduate membership provide steps that lead to Member status.
Associate membership is ideal for designers employed in consultancies and design departments, for staff in university and TAFE design departments, and designers employed in other business areas. It's tailored for professional designers who do not require the services and benefits offered by Member (MDIA) status.
It also suits graduates and designers who are working toward the Points System requirements for Member status and wish to be identified as practising professionals. Tertiary design educators who are not designers are also eligible for Associate membership.
The grades of Fellow and Life Fellow recognise achievement and service to the design professions. His or her peers in the DIA may award a Member the status of Fellow or Life Fellow.
Members and Fellows who complete the annual Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirement are eligible for the additional recognition of Accredited DesignerTM.
Designers who want to maintain membership and contact with the DIA network on ceasing full-time practice or in cases of hardship can apply for Non-practising membership.
International professional membership provides support to Australian educated designers working in their countries of origin, and international designers needing professional networking connections in the Asia-Pacific region.
The Business Stream of DIA membership is open to individuals and businesses who have an interest in and wish to associate with the design professions.
There are no specific requirements for this membership stream. However the DIA Membership Committee reserves the right to refuse applications that are deemed inappropriate to the aims and values of the professional body.
The DIA is a not-for-profit company in which all members are shareholders. The Constitution of the DIA stipulates that only personal professional members of Member (MDIA) status and above have voting rights.
