CAMERON THIESSEN
LOCAL OFFICE ARCHITECTURE
In July this year, after 15 years in medium to large architectural practices, Cameron made the big
break and started out on his own. The motivation to go it alone stemmed from a desire to engage
in a more intimate practice of architecture and a more complete and rounded understanding of
the mechanics of practice. Developing theoretical underpinnings of a deep understanding of context
and process-driven design coupled with a stronger engagement with the user was deemed achievable
only by starting again and returning to first principles. The name of the practice, Local Office
Architecture, reflects the focus on context and process. It is an attempt to represent the practices’
approach of a critical response to local contextual issues and the rituals of daily life as opposed to an
architecture based on the glorification of the object. Cameron’s concern for the dilution of the traditional
leadership role of the architect in the shaping of the fabric of the city has prompted further study in
the allied fields of Urban, Landscape, Graphic and Interior Design. He is currently half way through a
Masters in Urban Planning.
