Tax Office to tower over Docklands. Prominent DIA Practice Member Bates Smart has designed a new building as one of four towers for 735 Collins Street in Melbourne’s docklands.

The building is being designed for property developer Walker Corporation, which this week announced that the Australian Tax Office would be a tenant at the new address.

The Bates Smart design for the building has been inspired by the strong shapes and forms of stacked boxes and industrial containers originally used in the docklands.

According to a report in Architecture and Design, ‘Boxes are piled in alternate directions and around corners creating an abstract rhythm of smooth, textured and recessed elements.’

Bates Smart Director, Guy Lake, described the structure as ‘calm’ and ‘refined’ without being highly coloured or articulated.

‘Architecturally, the level of detailing and texture increases as you come down to the ground plane,’ he said.

Bates Smart is aiming for a possible five star Green Star rating and five star ABGR standard for the building.
